Lufthansa had experience withship-catapult launched mail planes on the South Atlantic..... in 1938 Nordmeer was launched near the Azores crossing to the Pan American Port Washington base in Manasset Bay near New York City. The Germans also flew a mail service from Bathurst to Brazil 1934-1938 with Dornier Wal equipment, initially with mid-ocean refuelling from catapult ships but from April 1935 nonstop Air France's Latecoere Lieutenant Vaisseau de Paris, repaired after being seriously damaged in a Florida hurricane in 1935, made the Biscarosse-Port Washington crossing successfully

Pan American's Boeing 314s got some homegrown competition on the Atlantic from American Export Airlines Sikorsky VS-44 boats which reportedly had a better range than the Boeings and went on to be the last of the prewar designed Atlantic boats to carry passengers (in California). The VS-44 had started as the XPBS for the US Navy in 1937 Excambian N41881 falsely painted as Excalibur, Baltimore 1953 ( the real Excalibur had crashed) Attachments:
