I went through 4 or 5 'low cost' slide/negative scanners over time. Each was basically a disaster starting with an uneven light and progressing badly from there. I finally bit the bullet and bought the Epson for >£400 It scans prints, slides & negatives and comes with holder for 12 slides and annoyingly 3 strips of 6 negative. has Epson and Silverfast software Both softwares will scan all 12 slides or 18 negatives automatically and save individual images. The Epson one has Digital ICE scratch & dust removal which works quite well, but doubles the time (at least) per scan (It does an infra red scan first to find the scratches) so you say 'Start' and have a cuppa. But see ICE Album comparing With & Without ICE the 1st of each image is the normal scan, the 2nd the ICE one Not the cheapest & you need a lens brush to get rid of dust and hair, but you would with any scanner

I have also bought a V800 - following recommendations from (among others) Lee Howard - who is our guru and hard taskmaster on scanning. Have yet to read the manual and start scanning but am encouraged by your comments. Like all new technology where I have not used it before, one starts with some trepidation! Malcolm Fillmore

Malcolm Fillmore Buying a second slide or negative holder is a good idea - you fill that one up while the first is scanning - Once you get started for real. The free software - Silverfast - also merits a look instead of using the Supplied Epson software

I use an Epson V700 for my slide scanning and Vuescan software rather than SilverFast SE. Laser Soft Imaging are now offering an upgrade to SilverFast SE Plus for €29, and they claim the resultant scans yield increased dynamic range. Does anyone have experience of this "improved" scanning software?

I only got the email today telling me about the upgrade! Not sure if I will buy it. My mammoth scanning exercise is almost done!

If you’re a keen photographer you already have a high quality copier; Your camera! Zoom and macro preferred but not essential. Slides, negatives, photographs and pictures can all be photographed with most cameras and with a bit of Photoshop manipulation can equal the original. For slides and negatives a simple jig with plywood/MDF base approx. 170mm wide and a vertical piece fixed firmly to one end will do. The base length should suit your camera and lens, 450 to 500mm long The end piece should be about 150mm wide by 125mm high. Subject to the maximum size of film you want to copy Place your camera on the board so that you can align the lens centre axis with the centre of a cut-out to be made in the vertical end. Cardboard or thin ply masks can be made to accurately suit your film size/s so the board cut-out should be large enough for the biggest film size with a bit to spare So long as the mask fits around the film and allows no stray light through, the camera will cope. ( I painted the board neutral grey as well but if you fill the frame with the zoom it will not matter) Line the lens up centrally with the film, Lift up with packing where required for the different film sizes AB Quick Refs offer a range of thicknesses CAMERA SETTINGS Set to highest quality 15 to 20 mps / 100 iso / f8 aperture With the lens about 100 to 150 mm away from the film face , use macro and zoom to fill the frame but leave a boarder for a bit of cropping Shutter delay for shake free results is a must. The ideal back light is a clear blue sky on a sunny day but you can try other light sources so long as it is even i.e. no shadows, trees or roof tops. I have yet to experiment with the newer LED lighting. Colour negatives are more demanding; my computer shows a thumb nail greatly enlarged with strange colours which after inversion requires careful colour manipulation to match the original Copying photographs requires the same settings but an even light source from the front and no shadows or reflections. A sunny day with white clouds seems best and a white reflector helps (paper) Multi –copying is best with a tripod but with good light and faster speed hand held can also produce good and qiuck results Try it, once you have a few standard settings worked out the rest is easy.

You get slide holder attachments for the ends of lenses to take pix of slides but they only work for full frame CCD's My Pentax K-5 only has a 3/4 size sensor (or thereabouts) so they don't work with it

Hello All
Bought a V800, with Silverfast 8, recently and so far have tried some old B/W photos and a few Kodachrome slides. With mixed success.
I find the supplied instructions both for Silverfast and Epsom leave a lot to be desired especially in what the various 'tools' do or when you should use them.
Could someone point me in the direction of any good written or video advice on how to get the best out of it please?
Thanks

Must admit the Silverfast icons are in a foreign language! I don't have a problem with the Epson software and 'tend' to use that with one exception. - I bought a V700 Neg holder that has 4 rows of negs. The V800 software only works on 3! My settings for slides - sometimes I even use a higher dpi if I'm going to crop the original mightily I have all the effects switched off and do them later in Lightroom/Photoshop, but they are best tried one-at a time! My Epson V800 Settings by eLaReF, on Flickr I typed youtube epson v800 scanner into a search engine these are just the first 2 replies www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PB2nI37JZQwww.youtube.com/watch?v=KZ0z2Oe5RXAso there are plenty out there

Thanks again for your advice. Seems to be getting easier now. But you the Silverfast rather than the Epson software. Now to start improving on my lightroom use!
