Peter Hillman writes:
It is my sad task to inform Air-Britain of the death of Barbu Nicolescu (of Romania). He was a member until 2013 and was a good friend of the late Tony Morris who, I believe, paid for his membership when things in Romania were difficult.
Barbu (also known as Bill) was an aeronautical engineer and much involved with the manufacture in Romania of the Islander and BAC One-Eleven, visiting the UK in this connection several times. He was an avid aviation historian and kept meticulous records of Romanian civil aviation which he was pleased to share with the wider aviation community.
He was a generous host: I stayed with him in Bucharest with his wife and son Stefan, and he used his influence to get me on the ramp at Baneasa Airport to photograph many of Tarom's Antonov 24 fleet and into a hangar where some ATPs were being overhauled. On another occasion he managed to get my connecting flight from Baneasa to Iasc held for me as my (BA) flight from Heathrow to the main airport (Otopeni) was delayed.
Barbu actually passed away in 2017—coincidentally the same year as his great friend Tony Morris. Not having heard from him for some time I made contact with a Romanian spotters’ group on Facebook and they informed me of his death after making contact with his wife, Gabriela.
I have written to Gabriela expressing my belated sympathy and mentioned that he was a greatly valued member of Air-Britain who will be fondly remembered.
