In addition to the main access tunnel. the thoroughly planned Central Area was equipped with 4 vehicle* and 2 pedestrian subways giving airside access to the far side of the aprons see maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=16.4&lat=51.47392&lon=-0.45159&layers=170&right=ESRIWorldonly 3 of the vehicle subways were completed and used and the pedestrian subways believed never used. Vehicle subways were built either side of the main tunnel....this 1954? view shows the never completed LH subwayl before it was boarded up...the RH subway was much used by servicing vehicles and passenger buses The vehicle subway accessing the farside of the Oceanic apron seen from the south west end of the (Europa/Britannic) passenger building roof gardens, it was filled in around 1967 and the Cargo tunnel dug to its left In front of the BEA Pionair is the slope into the vehicle subway at the southwest end of the Europa terminal (1958) And a similar view but 1960ish shows the Air India base and earthmound southside And looking down from the roof gardens is the other end of the vehicle subway in front of the MEA Comet...all filled in when the Cargo Tunnel was built nearby around 1967-1968 Wardair DC-6B CF-CZZ taxying past the SW end of the roof gardens with the vehicle subway visible, 1962 2 pedestrian subways were built under the Central aircraft aprons...no evidence of them ever being used( except reportedly as convenient routes for cable ducting)...behind 'CARGO SERVICE' on this BOAC DC-7CF the 2 wedge shaped structures cover the steps down to the subway to the SW corner of the Queens building. This later (1966?) shot of 9G-ABO shows the foot-tunnel step covers still present after the eastern pier from Europa/T2 had been built but they would soon be removed like the lighting pillar The apron view northeast from the Queens Building saw continuous alterations from the late 1950s....the wedge shaped structures either side of the big lighting tower were the ' airside' entrances to the second pedestrian subway leading to the future site of T1 and probably never used except for cable & service ducting with no apparent landside entrance!

The Oceanic departures building had a 'waving' terrace on its southern end which allowed passengers family and friends (and photographers!) to get close to departing aircraft e.g. this PIA Boeing 720B, 1965 The Oceanic 'waving' terrace is quite crowded in this September 1964 shot

The smart modern ' all-night' catering facilities in the Central Area passenger building attracted ' non-airport' late-night custom e.g. from people driving home from London's West End .......good for Forte's profits but frowned on by the airport authorities e.g in April 1958 ( Daily News) abpic Attachments:
