The Boeing YC-97 was based on the B-29 design with the B-29s Wright R-3350 engines , structure in 2024 alloy (and even a vestigial tail -turret!) and an example passed through Heathrow in 1960 en route to some mercenary type work in Africa The Boeing YC-97J was a turboprop development of the production C-97 (which was based on the B-50s structure, and so used the new higher strength 7075 alloy) ..... this one passed through Heathrow Northside in January 1956. .Boeing abandoned the turboprop tanker derivative of the C-97 and promoted the turbojet KC-135. Parts of the YC-97J were incorporated in the Guppy program Attachments:

The LHR-LGW movements site only has archive movements for Jan/Feb/Mar and the first 2 are one movement each No YC-97J listed for March either, but just to get everybody upset it lists the occasional Stratocruiser!:- 01/03/1955 G-AMOK V701 VISCOUNT 24 02/03/1955 G-ALHS DC-4M 156 02/03/1955 G-ALHK DC-4M 157 02/03/1955 G-AKWY DH-82A TIGER MOTH 83138 02/03/1955 G-AMSH DC-3 16583/33331 02/03/1955 G-AMUU YORK 1 03/03/1955 G-ALHU DC-4M 166 04/03/1955 N5119V DC-6B 44119 05/03/1955 F-BGND L-1049G CONSTELLATION 4513 05/03/1955 G-ANMH SKEETER 6 SR905 06/03/1955 N5120V DC-6B 44120 06/03/1955 G-AKTU VIKING 1B 211 07/03/1955 LN-LMT DC-6B 44170 07/03/1955 F-BBDJ DC-4M 42942 07/03/1955 G-ALTZ CONSUL 5134 07/03/1955 G-ALZU AMBASSADOR 5217 09/03/1955 VH-EAF L-1049E CONSTELLATION 4579 09/03/1955 G-AMOL V701 VISCOUNT 25 12/03/1955 G-AIAF PROCTOR 5 AE87 12/03/1955 G-ALHX DC-4M 169 12/03/1955 G-ALHY DC-4M 170 13/03/1955 G-AGOB YORK 1 1229 16/03/1955 G-ANAP DOVE 1B 04433 16/03/1955 G-ANHB V701 VISCOUNT 62 17/03/1955 G-ALWE V701 VISCOUNT 4 17/03/1955 G-AMFV DC-3 10105 17/03/1955 G-ANBB BRITANNIA 102 12903 17/03/1955 F-BGNQ V708 VISCOUNT 33 17/03/1955 VH-EAN L-1049H CONSTELLATION 4803 18/03/1955 PH-CGH CONVAIR 340 121 18/03/1955 G-ALCU DOVE 2 04022 18/03/1955 G-AMJV DC-3 33556 18/03/1955 HB-IBI DC-6B 43750 18/03/1955 G-AMOH V701 VISCOUNT 21 18/03/1955 G-AMTS HERON 2 14007 18/03/1955 G-ANLO COMET 3 06100 18/03/1955 EI-AFQ BRISTOL 170 MK 31 12937 18/03/1955 EI-AGI V707 VISVOUNT 34 18/03/1955 VT-DAR L-749A CONSTELLATION 2619 18/03/1955 G-AMWC BRISTOL 170 MK 32 13128 19/03/1955 G-AHNI TUDOR 4 1342 19/03/1955 G-ALHN DC-4M 160 19/03/1955 G-ALXN DC-3 14661/26106 19/03/1955 LN-LMS DC-6B 44167 19/03/1955 CS-TSA DC-4M 3072 20/03/1955 G-ALSD STRATOCRUISER 15946 20/03/1955 G-ALZR AMBASSADOR 5214 20/03/1955 G-ALZT AMBASSADOR 5216 20/03/1955 G-ALZW AMBASSADOR 5219 20/03/1955 G-AMOG V701 VISCOUNT 7 20/03/1955 G-AMOJ V701 VISCOUNT 23 20/03/1955 G-ANAL S-51 WIDGEON WA/H/90 20/03/1955 F-BGNP V708 VISCOUNT 18 20/03/1955 N1041V STRATOCRUISER 15941 20/03/1955 N6021C L-749A CONSTELLATION 2659 20/03/1955 OO-AWT CONVAIR 240 157 20/03/1955 OY-KLO DC-6 43133 20/03/1955 VT-DGM L-1049C CONSTELLATION 4548 21/03/1955 G-ALWF V701 VISCOUNT 5 21/03/1955 G-ALZX AMBASSADOR 5220 21/03/1955 G-ALZY AMBASSADOR 5221 21/03/1955 G-ALZZ AMBASSADOR 5222 21/03/1955 G-AMAA AMBASSADOR 5223 21/03/1955 G-AMAC AMBASSADOR 5225 21/03/1955 G-AMON V701 VISCOUNT 27 21/03/1955 G-ANGF YORK 1 21/03/1955 F-BGNM V708 VISCOUNT 12 21/03/1955 F-BGNR V708 VISCOUNT 35 21/03/1955 VT-DAS L-749A CONSTELLATION 2620 21/03/1955 ZS-DBR L-749A CONSTELLATION 2623 21/03/1955 ZS-DBS L-749A CONSTELLATION 2630 22/03/1955 N6503C L-1049D CONSTELLATION 4165 23/03/1955 G-ANAF DC-3 33436 26/03/1955 G-AMUP L-049E CONSTELLATION 2051 28/03/1955 G-ANHA V701 VISCOUNT 61 29/03/1955 N6534C DC-6B 43543 29/03/1955 G-AKGH STRATOCRUISER 15974 29/03/1955 G-AMUR L-049E CONSTELLATION 2065 29/03/1955 G-AMXM YORK 1 30/03/1955 GACDJ DH-82A TIGER MOTH 3183 30/03/1955 G-AHCV DC-3 12443 30/03/1955 G-ALHT DC-4M 165 30/03/1955 G-AMDB DC-3 26432 30/03/1955 G-AMOE V701 VISCOUNT 17 30/03/1955 G-AMOI V701 VISCOUNT 22 30/03/1955 EI-AFV V707 VISVOUNT 30 30/03/1955 N6535C DC-6B 43535 30/03/1955 VH-EAA L-1049E CONSTELLATION 4580

I once had the preliminary flight manual for the YC-97J but disappointingly it did not give details of performance enhancements. Swizz!

I will probably be slaughtered for hi-jacking this thread (only temporarily) but while on Heathrow movements, I am told that Canberra PR.7 WT528 'Aries V' visited Heathrow in 1959. Don't know a precise date or the reason for its visit but the last known round-the-world flight for this aircraft was a year beforehand.

Same YC-97J, different occasion...don't know the significance of the cross on the side....possibly connected with test-flying by Boeing before hand-over

Ignoring the etiquette side of things, one good reason for not hi-jacking topics and, instead, starting your own is that we could have a sole Canberra expert who has the info, but who has no interests in C-97s and doesn't read this thread. You therefore don't get the answer to your question.

The very first Aero Spacelines Guppy conversion was converted from ex Pan Am Stratocruiser N1024V in the open air at Van Nuys, California ...the resultant 'Pregnant Guppy' retained the P&W R-4360 piston engines The expanded fuselage was constructed by workers standing on the original Stratocruiser's rooftop and with NASA Dryden in Oct62 RATO boosters were experimented with Attachments:
