A brief visit yesterday to Dublin Airport, to try and catch up with some EI- needs, flying out of Gatwick and arriving at 10:30, staying until 18:00.
Arrived with Ryanair, who use the gates 100-120 on the northern pier. As you walk to the main terminal building, there are a few spots where you can see the biz parked near the hangars and some airliners parked on the closed runway. There is no opportunity to go into the departures section of the terminal and you have to exit to landside.
Having done this, I decided to walk around to the other side of the hangars to see if there was anything visible. I turned left out of T1 and followed the road to the McDs and Services behind the Aer Lingus hangars, but if coming out of T2 you can walk across the bottom of the horseshoe formed by airport parking and offices. There is a road behind the services that then takes you to the other side of the Aer Lingus hangars, which allows anything there to be noted. Yesterday it was just an Aer Lingus A330, the ex Arik A330 and a Falcon 7X.
Once back to the terminal I checked out any landside views and, basically, there are none. There is a staff restaurant behind the Alcock and Brown eatery and a small window with views onto the apron, but I suspect you would be moved on from here quite quickly. In T2 the Oak Bar Café would provide views of the approach but none of the aprons.
Fortunately, there do not appear to be any time restrictions on going through security and I went back airside about 6 hours before my flight. I found a quiet area at Gate 418 in T2, which gave views of movements on the runway and across the terminal aprons. Later I walked back to the Ryanair gates, stopping at The Street Food outlet in the food court for sustenance. This area is very busy and only gives limited views, even if you can get somewhere to sit near a window.
Finally back to the Ryanair pier, where movements can be monitored, but eating opportunities are limited. I can vouch that most gates have views, as our allocated gate for the flight back to Gatwick changed 6 times in an hour!
I went needing 7 Aer Lingus aircraft and made the 4 A330s and 2 of the 3 757s I needed (the other being in Shannon). Three of the 4 ATRs of Aer Lingus Regional were seen – the other was somewhere on the ground, presumably hangered. A Stobart E195 was also made, coming from Southend. I made 7 Ryanair and 1 Ryanair Sun, but then I need loads. Other than the standard European fare, below are a few of the others noted during the day.
