A correction to the L1000 to L9999 book (1979 edition). Blenheim L9246 of 57 Squadron was not shot down by flak on 10 May 40. The crew were injured by flak on that day. It was actually abandoned at Rosières-en-Santerre when 57 Squadron withdrew from there on 17 May 40.

Another correction to the above book. Beaufort L4468 was actually lost on 20 Dec 39 (manufacturer's test flight, pilot killed). It was not SOC until 23 Apr 40, which is presumably from where the date listed in the book is derived.

L1794 was shot down by an He111, not a Ju88. The Heinkel was itself shot down by the Hurricane, flown by P/O Drummond of 46 Sqn.

The loss date of 46 Sqn Hurricanes L1793, L1804, L1805, L1806, L1815, L1853, L1961, L1980 which were sunk on HMS Glorious should read 8 Jun 40.

My 1979 edition lists L2099 as serving only with 601 Sqn and "Crashed in forced landing near Middle Wallop 1.6.40" However, the 601 Sqn ORB records that the aircraft "suffered extensive damage", ie was not a total loss. It was indeed repaired, as it served with 303 Sqn as RF-O from 9.9.40, and was still with squadron in 11.40 at Leconfield. What was its final fate please?

Andy
The later, combined booklet, L1000 - N9999 says 29/17/601/7 OTU/303/56 OTU Cv to Mk IIA DG637 5.41

Yes most sources claim the aircraft was indeed L4686
There is however one source which says otherwise, Shores et al in MAW Vol 1, who claims they were in L4717. This in turn leads to a number of questions involving three 208 Sq Lizzies. L4686 Halley shot down 16.11.40 (16/10 is a typo, no action that day) but not in Shores L4714 Halley shot down 15.10.40, same in Shores L4717 Halley shot down 15.10.40, Shores shot down 16.11.40
Looking at the date 15.10.40 all sources I have say one Lysander was lost, L4714 Only Halley claims L4717 was also lost on this date (Shores states 16.11.40)
So if we agree that L4686 was lost on 16/11, when was L4717 really lost? I cannot find it anywhere in Shores MAW 1 during all of 1940
Gustavsson/Slongo in Desert Prelude follow the main road and have L4686 as lost 16/11 L4714 as lost 15/10 L4717 nothing
Does the ORB say anything at all regarding L4717?

Stig, Funnily enough I have also been searching for info on L4717. Take a look at my postings on the subject on the RAF Commands Forum: www.rafcommands.com/forum/showthread.php?27482-Westland-Lysander-anomaliesSince then I have also looked at the Nov40 ORB, which states that L4686 was the machine lost on 16.11.40. Regarding L4717, it appears in the ORB as follows: 26 Aug 40 - forced landing, required an engine change - the ORB records the engine serial numbers involved 26 Sep 40 - operational mission Oct 40 - does not appear Nov 40 - does not appear So it seems to have left 208 Sqn around this time period, but for an unknown reason. Now, ORBs are not infallible with regard to serials as you well know, but I would need to see Shores' evidence for L4717 being the machine lost on 16.11.40. All evidence available to me in the ORBs points to the Gustavsson/Slongo version being correct. Andy

Thanks for checking Andy So still a mystery and no real good option in the ORB. Perhaps it was used for spares in the end and as such was SOC 15 Oct 1940? Can't say without looking but wasn't 6 Sq also using Lysanders? Any other units in Egypt? I wonder what is actually written in the record card kept in Britain? Rather irritating small puzzles these ones.... Cheers Stig

Oxford L9655 is shown as 8 FTS, SOC 5.4.40. This strike was as a result of damage received when Spitfire L1022 of 603 Sqn landed on top of it at Montrose on 20 March 1940:Some addition discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C16471143Note the correct squadron for the Spitfire, not 503 Sqn as listed in the file. Some additional info on P/O Scott, with thanks to Geoff Negus: Wandsworth (Streatham) Cemetery: 20.3.40 42081 Acting Plt Off William Creighton Scott, RAF, 8FTS (Montrose).
