Post by Admin on Mar 19, 2020 16:50:51 GMT
As mentioned in part 1, this is not a full log, as the MAX elements will take some time to sort out. Hopefully I will be able to post those later once sorted.
Updates to part 1 – thanks to those that responded
Spokane – N117HC looks like it should be N179WC, locally based and in the scheme we saw
Everett – N5514V = 46020, N5514X = 46021
l/n 997 787 Gulf Air tail only painted
l/n 993 787 Vistara tail only painted
l/n 995 787 ANA tail only painted
And a couple of typos – the Uzbek 787 was UK78706 and KC-46 86042 should be 86052
The journey from Spokane to Phoenix was broken with a three-hour stop-over in San Jose, with Southwest providing transport on both legs
San Jose March 11 2020
The full length of the terminal is available air-side and there are large windows allowing good views of the airliners on stand and of the biz-jets on the opposite side. There was a bit of heat haze, but by viewing form different spots a lot of the aircraft were identified, including some in hangars.
The majority of airline traffic was Southwest with 25 examples noted, plus a handful of Delta, American, Alaska and United. Missed a BA Captain friend by a couple of hours as he was driving a flight home later that day.
Amongst a standard selection of biz it was nice to see Beech 18 N9840Z active, departing during my stay. If anybody wants details of what I saw please contact me off list.
Phoenix Sky Harbor March 11 2020
Arriving here, it was noticeable that there were a lot fewer Southwest and American than on previous visits. Having picked up the hire car, it was down to the south side – cargo and the FBOs.
Cargo is mainly FedEx and UPS, with the nice addition of Convair 640 XA-UTW, supporting the UPS hub.
For the FBOs it was a case of a drive round, with an excursion up onto the Cutters balcony. No problems here but no cameras to be used, just optics.
The hangar to the side of Cutters had three HondaJets inside, while the main ramp was dominated by an RAAF A330MRTT
N48HM HA-420
N273C HA-420
N552DB HA-420
(A36-003) KC-30A RAAF
Plus a standard, if slightly smaller, selection of biz
Then off to the Best Western Phoenix Airport, just south of the airport – no views but a decent restaurant for an evening meal with a breakfast included in the price.
The next day was going to be a bit rushed, due to a change in plans. When the trip was planned the only MAX element was going to be the United fleet at Goodyear, but an influx of Canadian examples into Marana meant that this would be the first call.
Marana March 12 2020
As I had visited last July I was not too concerned about the longer-term inmates, such as Delta or dead Chinese airliners, so just some highlights here.
The Air Canada MAXs are stored on the front maintenance ramp – fleet numbers only noted, bar one

Moving on to the initial target for the area
Goodyear March 12 2020
Useless fact of the day – the town was named after the tyre (sorry tire) company because of a large factory in the area.
As there had been a lot of rain in the previous 24 hours I was cautious about the track alongside the airfield, but it was fine and the undergrowth was low as well. As with Marana, not a full log as I had visited in July. The United MAXs were in the main storage area and were

Then it was on to Luke AFB for a bit of Turkish Delight, before a quick pass at Scottsdale and returning the car at Sky Harbor. It was at this stage that I found out my 18:10 SW flight to Austin had been cancelled and I was rebooked on the 21:00, so time for a meal, catching up on e-mails and watching a few Southwest movements.
Part 3 will cover the Texas element of the trip, plus a transfer at JFK.
