According to AIR81/11682: discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C17082432the incident involving W8164 took place on 18 Jan 42. In addition, an article in "Small Air Forces Observer" Issue 130 about Flt Lt Bonham says:
"This pilot flew the Buffalo with No.243 Squadron and was wounded in action on January 18, 1942. While engaging enemy fighters his knee was shattered by a bullet and his Buffalo was badly shot up (W8164/WP-J) but he managed to make it back to base."

An identical photo of Halifax TL-P appears on pages 47 and 70 of the book. The one on Page 47 is captioned as W7676 The one on Page 70 is captioned as W7675. W7676 does seem to have been lost as TL-P. Does anyone know the code worn by W7675?

No good answer Andy
But for what it's worth in my booklet (which is V1000-V9999, W1000-W9999) the photo is on page 50 and is only referred to as W7676.
Size of the photo makes it impossible to read any real details except of course the code TL-P
Cheers Stig

Beaufort W6497 is shown as going to SAAF on 15.6.43. The Beaufort File says the same. All the AM78 records is that it was SOC on 27.7.44. "85 Years of the South African Air Force" (Winston Brent) makes no mention of this aircraft serving with the SAAF. Thoughts anyone?

No good answer Andy, but I have (as you know) a previous issue from 1983, RAF aircraft V1000 to V9999, W1000 to W9999. That issue says W6497 OADU/ME SOC 27.7.44 Since I don't have the AM 78 card, it certainly feels that is basically what the card says.
The issue you have W1000 - Z9999 is clearly issued later (as is our Beaufort file - 1990)
Unfortunately I have no idea why the SAAF suddenly gets involved. Winston's book is great, but not Gospel and lacks at least a few aircraft here and there. At least Hayward is convinced that W6497 was in use by No 16 Sq between 15.6.1943 until SOC 27.7.1944 Seems it was accompanied by W6488 since it has exactly the same data. If that is wrong the only thing I can think of really is that some kind duplication has taken place in the Beaufort file
Cheers Stig
