Hi All
I have lots and lots of aviation pictures and documents on my computer, and I use the Windows File History for backing these up to an external hard drive. I feel rather safe with this, but my wife doesn't trust the File History completely, so she thinks I should have a second back-up, since (admittedly) these files are important to me.
Sometimes she helps out and copy and paste them manually into a second external hard drive. She herself keeps her own most important files on Dropbox as well, since they are small enough to fit into the free space. If I did the same, I would have to pay a fortune (I think) for the space needed.
So, how does everyone else solve your back-up problems? Are you paying for ”cloud space”? And which cloud service have you chosen? Or perhaps you are happy with the File History?
Cheers Stig

Experts recommend a “3-2-1” backup strategy: make 3 digital copies of your data, keep 2 copies on different hard drives, keep 1 copy in the cloud. I have been using Dropbox for nearly a year now, and I’m very happy with it. It costs me just over £95 per year for 2TB of storage, but I think it’s worth it. I also use a free Microsoft programme called “SyncToy” to synchronise data between different hard drives, but I believe that it’s no longer available to download, but there are many other options out there.
Regards, Pete

Thank Pete
At this point we are actually doing a 2-2-0 strategy. Can the experts explain why they feel it is necessary using a "cloud" function in addition to other precautions? What does it give back for the added cost of 95 quid? To me it sounds like using both braces and belt and topping it up with a life saving harness.

My pictures/scans folder contains my negatives/slides back to 1968 with digital starting 2006 It, along with documents & stuff is over 1Tb so a cloud would be v-e-r-y expensive. The desktop has 3 x 3Tb drives, the relevant folders getting copied nightly to the other 2. That covers HDD failure (My PC doesn't get switched off - I have a small pile of them) Flood/Fire/Burglary is catered for by a portable 3Tb drive plugged in & copied to roughly 2 weekly & kept out of the house e.g. car/garden shed etc.

If you have somewhere safe to keep one copy outside the house to cover the fire/burglary scenario as eLaRef does then possibly using the cloud is not necessary, but I consider it worthwhile. Before retirement I kept a regularly-updated copy in my locker at work but now I don’t have another location that I consider safe so I use Dropbox.

Thanks Guys
Appreciate your efforts and taking the time to enlighten me. The way we live make both fire and burglary a very low risk, but still worth considering of course.
We will muse about this for a while. We can of course try and store one of the external gadgets somewhere else, just in case....

I'm in a first floor flat up a hill in a retirement complex, so flood & burglary are probably not a risk, but I went through to the 'office' one day to find smoke billowing out of the processor box. One of the crimped connectors on an HDD power lead hadn't been crimped tightly enough and had been sparking unseen under the drive. I now have a well scorched circuit board on the drive, although it still works So, it CAN (And WILL) happen. Don't just think House Fire!! W-a-r-r-u-m 1Tb Drive by eLaReF, on Flickr

i use a cloud back-up service called Carbonite, which automatically backs up everything on my machine at regular intervals whenever the machine is on. It is expensive, but I have been too lazy to look at other options, so I'm sure there are cheaper alternatives. Peter's quote of £95 for 2TB for a year is certainly much better.
I agree with others that at least one of your back-ups should be in a different physical location.

Thanks Steve
Yes we are indeed contemplating the need to store data outside our building (flat). My wife will probably bring the topic up with a friend of ours who does not live too far away.
Again thanks very much for all the sympathetic answers. Highly appreciated!!
