We are very sad to record the passing of Ian Burnett just short of his 80th birthday. This followed a battle with Parkinson’s Disease and, latterly, pancreatic cancer. Ian had expertly edited the monthly Overseas Registers in Air-Britain News since 1974 and its content expanded hugely under his supervision. We first met Ian many years ago when he invited us onto the jumpseat of his British Airways ’747 for the approach into Johannesburg. His distinguished service as a BA captain was matched by his ownership of several light aircraft starting with an Emeraude, then a Cessna Cardinal and latterly, Piper G-ARNK and Cessna 180 G-BTSM which took him and colleagues to aviation events all over Europe. But, above all, Ian developed an encyclopedic knowledge of world registers and he assembled a vital network of correspondents who ensured the Overseas Registers was the single unique source for civil aviation knowledge. He will be hugely missed and our thoughts are with his wife Jenny and his many friends worldwide.
