Indeed Andy
Gunby/Temple add that it was a night ops (they say 4-5 Oct 1941) to Benghazi. They also claim it is not in the ORB of 70 Sq
For some unknown reason MAW Vol 1 says it was T2626, which was a black out s/n

That is interesting Andy
Both Bomber Losses in the Middle East and Mediterranean and the Mediterranean Air War Vol 1 has it as lost on 21 April. Since it was a night mission I would say it depends on which side of midnight they went down.
Both seems to have missed the reference to AIR 81/6029 since none of them have any correct crew list, both of them list a P/O Slatter as the pilot. MAW even indicated the crew was safe....

The Battle of Crete effectively ended during the night of 31 May/1 June 1941, when the last attempt to evacuate significant numbers of personnel from the south coast of the island was made. The date 31 May 1941 was used by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission in the 1950s as the supposed date of death of those personnel for whom it did not have precise details of when they were killed. My own note on the loss of T2895 is: Alamein Memorial: 23.5.41: 37Sqn (RAF) Wellington T2895 missing from operation to Maleme airfield, Crete. The only contact after take-off was signal giving a return time of 0640hrs on 24.5.41. Assumed shot down by flak and crashed in the sea while returning. 400054 Sgt (Plt) Patrick Field, RAAF, 28. Son of Dr Edward Field and Mary Elizabeth Field, of Glenhuntly, Victoria. Body washed ashore and buried with a cross 1km W of El Burg, Egypt, but grave lost. 631010 Flt Sgt Ernest Miles Kelsall, RAF, 20. Son of Henry Joseph and Ethel Rosa Kelsall, of Withington, Manchester. Body washed ashore near Damietta and buried, but grave lost. 759111 Sgt Peter Godfrey Marsh, RAFVR. 758231 Sgt Harold John Mew, RAFVR, 26. Son of William John and Dorothy Ann Mew, of Belstone, Devon. 553231 Sgt John Rowe, RAF, 18. Son of John and Sarah Anne Rowe, of Wattsville, Monmouthshire. 550283 Sgt Leslie Seymour Tipper, RAF, 23. Son of Percival Seymour Tipper and Grace E S Tipper, of Billingshurst, Sussex. Body washed ashore and buried with a cross 1km W of El Burg, Egypt, but grave lost.

How very odd Andy My copy of the T1000 to T9999 actually lists the date as 24 May 1941. My issue is from 1981 and I am pretty certain it must be the first printing. Are you saying a later printing lists the date as 31 May? Gunby/Temple also list 23/24 May raid on Maleme and since take off was at 23.00H I can only assume 24 May is more likely than the 23rd B Rgds Stig

Stig, This thread is for the volume T1000-V9999 (1997), so yes, a later volume. Andy
